To commemorate the 40th birthday of Asia's largest street and floats parade, the organisers made Chingay 2012 an extravagant one. The highlight of the event - a 360m waterway with performers making a splash and creating spectacular stunts and exhilarating acts with water. The breath-taking pyrotechnics and plethora of colourful displays kept children entertained throughout the show, and also left adults in awe. While watching the 2012 Chingay Parade from home, I started to ponder about the significance of Chingay for the Singaporean community.

The first Chingay parade was organised to inject some festive spirit after the ban on firecrackers was imposed. The initial few Chingay parades were held with much less fanfare. In the past, there wasn't any proper viewing stand. Singaporeans lined the street just to catch a glimpse of the floats that would pass by. While watching the parade by the streets together, Singaporeans fostered closer ties. Today, everything has improved. We have the luxury of viewing the parade from grandstands, or from our television set. The floats that we see are also more colourful and intricate. While we are immersing ourselves in the vibrant parade, let us not forget the intentions behind the annual Chingay parade - to bond the Singapore community as one.
